Let’s introduce you to who will be leading you through these workshops! Meet Courtney - with over a decade’s experience in financial operations, she founded CCE Consulting to support small business owners with their bookkeeping, and to provide access to empathetic and approachable financial education.

Today, Courtney manages a diverse roster of clients through Southern BC - including Salt Spring Island! - and offers bookkeeping and consulting services to those looking to streamline their systems.

Read on to hear from Brette of Poppy’s and Courtney of CCE, as they chat through these offerings and more.

Brette: What made you want to run these workshops?

Courtney: I am a passionate educator and want to help small business owners feel in control of their finances. I know that not everyone has the capacity/resources for an ongoing relationship with a bookkeeper, so workshops are a great way for folks to access the info and tools they need to manage their own finances! It's also a great way to connect with your community and other folks with similar goals and knowledge levels around you (I've had study groups emerge post workshops - so great).

I saw a huge need in the small business community for education that is empathetic and supportive but still delivers the nitty gritty. I believe you can do both - but so many people don't teach this way.

My own community is filled with creative folks (myself included!) so I am very experienced with people who do not identify as admin/finance-oriented, particularly those who are prone to imposter syndrome and shame around. I built these workshops to help those people feel in control because I want their businesses to flourish! We need them!

Brette: What is drawing you to Saltspring? Why Poppy’s?

Courtney: I've had clients on SSI since I started the business! SSI is also such a unique hub for creative folks who want to do things differently ➝ this is so conducive to entrepreneurship. I know there is a huge community of resourceful folks out there operating their small businesses independently and I want to meet them!

I’ll go on record saying that it was your idea to host me and these workshops! Knowing that you are running Poppy's, it felt like the perfect fit for a community-minded space to share about these topics! I’m so honoured that when you saw a need in your community, you thought of me.

Brette: Bookkeeping and cashflow, that can make folks really nervous...

Courtney: I get it! I've heard all the questions before - and there really aren't stupid questions. Nothing will shock me!

I really value small business owners and their bravery - my intention is to build them up - not reprimand or judge them for things they have done or are not doing. It's just to share information that I believe will help them make great business decisions - and to help avoid the 2 am back-of-you-brain imposter syndrome thoughts.

This will be a safe and supportive space. Folks do not have the share/verbally participate, but there will be lots of space for questions for the people who do feel comfortable doing so. I promise I'll be gentle with you! 🥲

Brette: What will you walk away with after these workshops?

Courtney: Let’s dive into it!
101: awareness and understanding of key terms, tax responsibilities, sales tax guidelines, and the ability to identify admissible expenses for their own business.

Cash flow: tips and tricks for improving cash flow crunches. How to read and set up reports to track this.

Brette: How will someone leave the workshop feeling?

Courtney: Connected, supported, informed, and empowered.

One of the big things about these workshops is that you'll leave having formed a relationship with a bookkeeper (me)! This can be really helpful in the future if you decide you're ready for a bookkeeper - you already know me!
